Blog 3: Academic Differences

There are some major differences and similarities between the Japanese and American academic systems. While American workloads tend to be more demanding, some Japanese classes can be just as intense. Attendance is key for excelling in Japanese language classes, and active participation is required. However, there are major classroom differences. While Americans can openly ask questions, and participate in active discussions during class, this is not normal in Japan. Usually, you only answer if you are personally called on. Otherwise, you generally wait until the end of the class.
The Japanese course credit system is pretty much equal to the one in the U.S., so it is particularly helpful when choosing credit hours. However, the example course schedule for the fall semester of Tokyo International University seems laid back. There grading scale is also similar.
At the university, there are plazas for strictly speaking English or Japanese. There are also several clubs that people use to express their interests and make friends.

Example Grading Scale:

Blog 2: An American Abroad

When it comes to interpreting the surveys, I guess I can say that I agree with many typical American views. Sure, I like the use of buzzwords like freedom and independence, but many others do as well. Simple words and statements do not work well when describing a person.

With the popular belief that Americans are super outgoing, I’m a bit worried about how I’m supposed to fit in. I like the idea of making new friends, but I’m terrible at approaching and conversing with strangers. With this challenge, I’m determined to be more open and be the one who first initiates things. I hope that people will try to understand me as an individual rather than comparing me to other Americans.

In Japan, the culture and language are very high-context so I know I must pay more attention and take care when speaking with others. When it comes to my identity, I’m a bit guarded. I am willing to answer any questions or discuss any beliefs, but I don’t want to always go around advertising my opinions. I just hope people will try to understand me as an individual rather than assuming an incorrect stereotype.

Blog 1: Study Abroad Goals

Studying Abroad could be one of my greatest accomplishments, and will be some much better than just traveling to Japan (or at least that’s what I keep telling myself). I think the chance to study abroad will give me a lot more time and opportunities. My one real goal for studying abroad is to survive my time there and learn as much as I can. While most of my goals seem to be purely academic (and boring), there are many small things I also want to accomplish while I am there.

Major Goals

  • Language: I want to greatly improve my Japanese language skills which are currently not up to par. Because, if I’m being honest, I should readily admit that getting through my classes was a small struggle. While I really enjoy the learning the language, I know that I still have a long way to go.

o   I want to be able to understand the natural speed of native Japanese-speakers
o   Know a majority of the Kanji so I won’t be completely lost
o   Possibly work towards the level required of a language translator

  • Culture: I want to learn more about the society as a whole.

  • Economics: While in Japan, I want to learn more about the Japanese viewpoint and economic practices in order to obtain more information that would benefit my work towards a master’s degree in economics.
  • Professional: I want to learn skills that would help with a future job.

Minor Goals

  • Exploring: There are many things I want to do while in Japan.

o   Visit all of the major cities and temples
o   Go to any national parks or museums that I think would be interesting

  • Random:

o   Buy souvenirs for all of my friends, family, coworkers, etc.
o   Try lots of different foods
o   Join a club/ play an intramural sport
o   Drink tons of coffee
o   Make a few good friends
